I would like to introduce you to an ancient African tradition, called scarification. Scarifications have different accepted meanings depending on where the tradition is practiced, but they have one thing in common: modifying the human body to create a new identity. Although nowadays people with scarification scars are viewed differently, the poetic, symbolic and artistic elements of this ritual inspired me to create Hââbré: an object close to the human body that reminds us of our human identity.
I created Hââbré to pay tribute to the artistic beauty and symbolism of the scarifications worn by men and women. Hââbré has organic shapes, like scarification, but above all by modifying the mainstream shape of a drinking cup, it creates its own multi-purpose identity that perfectly fits any body.
Hââbré means both writing and scarification in the Kô language of Burkina Faso.
